The current Student version of MaxPlus II does not include support for Windows 2000, but the newer Baseline version 10 does. So, I downloaded version 10 and installed it. Then I was able to get the Win2000 drivers from the installation directory. I copied them out and uninstalled version 10. I then followed the procedure below from the Altera website for installing the ByteBlaster driver for Win2000. After rebooting, I was able to program the UP-1 board with the Student version.

I have attached the instructions and the necessary drivers as a zip file.

This will become an issue more in future semesters as students upgrade to Win2000, so you may want to post this on the website.

Q: How do I program or configure my Altera device on a Windows 2000 platform? (QuartusTM version 2000.03, MAX+PLUS version 9.6)

Problem

How do I program or configure my Altera® device on a Windows 2000 platform? (QuartusTM version 2000.03, MAX+PLUS® II version 9.6)

Solution

In addition to the operating systems listed in the readme.txt file, the Quartus software version 2000.03 and MAX+PLUS II software version 9.6 support device programming and configuration on the Windows 2000 operating system.

There is a new INF for installing Programmer hardware on the Windows 2000 platform. This file exists in the <system>\drivers\win2000 directory for the Quartus software version 2000.03 and the MAX+PLUS II software version 9.6. The installation procedure is as follows:

  1. Open the Control Panel (Start menu -> Settings -> Control Panel).
  2. Double-click on the Add/Remove Hardware icon to start the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard and click Next to continue.
  3. In the Choose a Hardware Task panel, select the Add/Troubleshoot a device radio button and click Next to continue. Windows 2000 will search for new Plug and Play hardware (New Hardware Detection window).
  4. In the Choose a Hardware Device window, select Add a new device and click Next to continue.
  5. In the Find New Hardware window, select the No, I want to select the hardware from a list radio button and click Next to continue.
  6. In the Hardware Type window, select Sound, video and game controllers and click Next to continue.
  7. In the Select a Device Driver window, select Have Disk ....
  8. Specify the full directory path to the win2000.inf file (e.g., <max+plus II directory>\drivers\win2000) and click OK.
  9. In the Digital Signature Not Found warning dialog box, click Yes to continue the installation.
  10. In the Select a Device Driver window, select the hardware to install and click Next to continue.
  11. The Start Hardware Installation window displays the hardware being installed. Click Next to continue.
  12. In the Digital Signature Not Found warning dialog box, click Yes to continue the installation.
  13. In the Completing the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard window, click Finish to continue.
  14. A system dialog appears prompting a reboot so that the new settings can take effect.
