Eric
Schwartz Named UF Teacher of the Year
Eric M. Schwartz, assistant director of the Machine Intelligence
Laboratory (MIL), is one of three faculty members named UF Teacher
of the Year for 2002-2003.
Schwartz, a lecturer in Electrical & Computer Engineering
(ECE), has taught at UF since 1995. He is a UF alumnus, receiving
bachelor’s degrees in electrical and mechanical engineering
in 1984. He also received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical
engineering from UF, in 1989 and 1995, respectively.
Schwartz is very enthusiastic about his students and about
MIL. “MIL makes it all happen,” he says. “I
can inspire students in class because of the work we do in the
lab.” Schwartz also credits his own mentors, “great
professors, Tony Arroyo, Keith Doty, Tom Bullock, and John O’Malley,” for
influencing his teaching today.
“He’s tough, but he’s the most beloved teacher
in the department,” says MIL director Tony Arroyo. “He
comes to work earlier and leaves later than anyone else, and
his office is always full of students. His commitment is unbelievable,” Arroyo
says.
“Dr. Schwartz is an extremely innovative teacher,” says
Professor Martin Uman, ECE chairman. “We are very pleased
that he received this recognition.”
