  Project Scope

The General is an autonomous mobile platform that can be used to mobilize any robotic project. This platform provides the capabilities of 4-wheel autonomous navigation while supporting loads over 300 lbs. The system is designed for a user to attach an entirely separate robot to the General and communicate with it to control locomotion, actions, and reactions of the platform. The General will also provide feedback to the master robot about obstacle information that surrounds it. By providing this information, the host can then react as desired. The idea for the project is to create a generic all purpose platform that can be used with any past or future robot projects such Koolio or Gnuman. Creating a generic mobile platform enables students to focus more on the intelligence of robotic projects rather than spending time designing mechanical platforms.

    News
7/25/07 - Platform built (gearboxes not complete)

8/1/07 - A load exceeding 600 lbs was loaded on the platform and rolled across the lab. The platform had no problems with the weight.

1/25/08 - Bushings for gearboxes finished. Gearboxes installed an tested.

3/27/08 - Batteries received and installed

1/4/08 - Driving test concluded that skid steering is not possible with the current supplied by the batteries. A turning fix is required. A load exceeding 300 lbs was driven down the hall with no problems. A good speed was also achieved during testing.
