Table 1 in the Axiom manual states that "the BUSY flag (bit 7) [of the
LCD command register address at $B5F0] should be tested before any
command updates to verify that any previous command is completed. 
The table also shows delays that could alternatively be taken into 
account (worst case) so that you can bypass checking the BUSY bit.
